Remote Learning

 Welcome to AXIS Summer Learning! 

  • Learning begins on June 16 and continues through July 23.  
  • Class Connects (live teaching via Zoom) occur Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, 20-30 minutes between 8:30am-10:10am (please see specific grade level schedule use your child’s grade this fall, school year 20-21). 
  • You will receive an email from your summer learning teachers on June 12.
  • During the first week teachers will share an introduction to the summer learning program and work on building relationships. 
  • If you need a device, support with wi-fi, or you no longer plan to participate, please email info@AXIScolorado.org

The Goals of AXIS Summer Learning are to: 

1) Have fun. 

2) Support students socially and emotionally and build connections (teacher to student and student to student). 

3) Maintain or grow partner language proficiency and English science content knowledge. 

4) Help support students (and families) in the at-home continual practice of important skills:  

A) Partner language listening and/or reading,
B) English literacy (reading and/or writing),
C) Math fact or number fluency.
 

Summer Learning Components: 

Weekly Class Connects (live teaching via Zoom) 

 

Independent Work and Choice Boards 
  • Each week, teachers will share:  
    • Independent work for reading, listening, or viewing at flexible times and 
    • Choice Boards with opportunities for learning activities to connect and extend learning. 
      • Students/families can choose different activities to complete flexibly throughout the week. 
  • Materials will be primarily digital. Parents may choose to print some materials when available, and if you would like you can pick up any necessary paper copies at AXIS Tuesday through Thursday during office hours (see above). Please be sure to confirm the pickup of materials with your teacher and Angie at info@AXIScolorado.org. 

 

Learning Logs 
  • Learning logs will help students be accountable for practicing:  
    • key academic skills (English reading and numbers/facts) and  
    • their partner language (listening and/or reading skills).

 

It is important that kids are practicing numbers or math facts and reading or being read to (listening) in English and their partner language as much as possible. Doing this practice most days of the week is ideal, but the basic target is three times a week. You child can complete their online Learning Logs each week, and teachers will monitor them. 

 

Kids can count activities from the independent work or Choice Boards towards their Learning Log. For example if they read something from the Choice Board or for their Class Connect, they can log it into their Learning Log.  

 

Other Notes: 

  • Teachers will set incentives for student participation - if students reach a certain amount for points from their participation across the Class Connects, Learning Logs, and Choice Boards, they can receive a prize at the end of summer remote learning!
  • Unified Science Theme: Exploring our Environment – Habitats, Weather and Climate 
    • All levels will be learning content aligned with this science domain based on the Core Knowledge Science Curricula (aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards)
    • Weekly sub-domains will build key concepts and vocabulary in both English and the partner language. 
  • Similar content will be differentiated for the varied grade levels, and we encourage siblings and friends to share their aligned learnings.  

AXIS 3Rs During Remote Learning 

 

The purpose of these expectations is to create the best possible learning environment for your child and others. We need your help to make sure your child follows these expectations during Class Connect times. Just like in our physical classrooms, if students are choosing not to follow the expectations, teachers will implement steps to help the child reflect on their choices. You can read these below. 

You can set your child up for success by reviewing these expectations below before they join Class Connects. 

Respect 

I will respect the learning of others:  

-Class Connect is learning time, not recess. 

I will raise my hands to ask a question or participate.

-Have a quiet space, quiet hands, and quiet feet (no walking around)

Next Steps 

At AXIS our first step in the classroom management and culture process is prevention. We try to create conditions to support the child to make positive choices and prevent the child from making poor choices. Teachers work to set and communicate clear expectations (see above), use positive reinforcement and compliment children when they are meeting these expectations. Teachers also implement positive group incentives to try to avoid using consequences. If a child chooses to disregard the expectations, below are the steps teachers will take. 

Step 1 - Teacher gives a verbal or visual warning 

Step 2 - Child will be placed in the Zoom “waiting room,” which we call the “Refocus Space.” This is a chance for students to take a break, reflect and learn from their choice, and get ready to rejoin. After 1-2 minutes in the Refocus Space, the teacher will restate the expectations and give the child a chance to rejoin. 

During a single Class Connect session, a child may be given up to 2 breaks in the “Refocus Space” before moving to Step 3. The teacher will email you if the child gets 2 breaks in one session. 

During the week, a child is given 3 breaks in the “Refocus Space” before moving to Step 3. The teacher will email you if the child gets 3 breaks in Class Connect sessions across multiple days. 

Step 3 - Child will be removed from the Class Connect session for the rest of that session. The child and parent will need to discuss this choice and these learning expectations. A teacher will contact you if this happens.

AXIS has the opportunity to offer the Amplify Reading On-line program for free to families this summer! Amplify Reading provides your child with the opportunity to learn literacy skills within an engaging story world that is powered by technology and adapts as your child moves through the program. Because of the personalized nature of the program, parents do not need to assist students with their learning. This is an activity your child can do independently! 

You will receive an email from your child’s Summer Learning Teacher by Monday 6/22 that provides the information you will need to get your child started in the program and set-up will take less that 1 minute! Your child can use the login information to access Amplify Reading from home until 7/24/2020. Teachers will be able track student’s progress in the program, which will update in real time, and will provide feedback and support as needed to help your child grow in their literacy skills.

AXIS CLASS MATRIX
Find the space where your child's grade and English intersect. Click on the teacher's plan. Repeat for your child's Partner Language class. The class plan will list Zoom/Class Connect links (will need password, see teacher email), materials needed, independent work, and other actions for your child to complete. Our goal during remote learning is to do the best we (school and families) can do together to continue teaching and learning during this time. 

A few important notes about expectations, accountability and assessment during remote learning: 

  • The priority is student participation. We hope children will be able to 
  • view the pre-recorded videos, 
  • complete the independent work, and 
  • participate in the Class Connects four days a week. 
  • If you are having difficulty having your child complete these three components most days of the week, we understand! Please just email your child's teacher for support and/or help with prioritization or modification. 
  • We will not be collecting paper assignments. We do encourage parents to check the completion and accuracy of their child's work as best they can. We understand you may only be checking completion for the partner language. It is okay! 
  • We are also adding objectives into lesson plans so you can check in with your child to ensure they have met the objective for that lesson. 
  • Teachers are piloting different ways to check in on student learning and progress. You may notice checks for understanding during the Class Connect, online quizzes, requests to send the teachers pictures of learning, or other methods. 
  • State testing has been cancelled. We may try other forms of reasonable assessment that your child can access remotely. The purpose of assessment is to help teachers understand what your child knows and needs to know. It will not negatively affect them. 
  • We will continue to add details as we finalize them. 
  • Above all, we care most about your child's social and emotional and physical health and well-being, please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you or your child needs support during this time. 
  • Your child will need a device (tablet, smart phone, or laptop). See HOME TECHNOLOGY ACCESS survey and AFFORDABLE WIFI below. 
 
  • There is flexibility built in and total recommended student time commitment is 4 days a week, ~3 hours a day, which can vary by grade. We will share other curated resources if you would like increase the number of days or hours. 
 
  • The focus is on participation and connecting. 
 
  • We kindly ask for your flexibility and patience as we all work to pilot remote learning. 
 
  • AXIS Remote Learning is a blended model using e-learning and material learning. 
 
  • E-Learning includes viewing two daily 15-minute pre-recorded lessons and joining two "Class Connects," 20-minute live sessions where teachers and classmates connect via video chat. 
 
  • 20-minute Class Connects occur Tuesday through Friday between 10:30am-12:30pm and 3:00pm-4:30pm. 
 
  • Material learning includes hard copy materials picked up at AXIS on Fridays or Mondays between 11:00am-1:00pm, please email info@AXIScolorado.org for more info. See Pick Up procedures in All the Details below.
 
  • Material learning includes some independent work. For younger students, this is enhanced with a family member or older sibling guiding them. 
 
  • If your child receives special services or English Language Learner services, a staff member will be reaching out to you directly to schedule small group support time via video conference.
 
  • Home Technology Access Survey. AXIS staff contacted all families that answered "no" to one or both questions or did not complete the survey. We have many devices on loan to families. If your needs change at any time, please email info@AXIScolorado.org. 
 
  • NEED AFFORDABLE WIFI? Check out the Internet Essentials plan from Comcast. New Internet Essentials customers will receive two free months of Internet service, which is available to all qualified low-income households for $9.95/month plus tax. Apply by April 30, 2020. 
 
1) Plan the day:
  • View the Class Connect schedule  
  • Select a time for your child to join one of the two 20-minute Class Connect for their English class (real-time connection with their teacher and classmates). 
  • Select a time for your child to join one of the two 20-minute Class Connect for their Partner Language class. 
 
2) Click on your child’s English class weekly lesson plan and have them watch the pre-recorded video lessons and begin their independent work assigned for that day, ideally before joining the Class Connect. 
 
3) Click on your child’s Partner Language weekly lesson plan and have them watch the pre-recorded video lessons and begin their independent work assigned for that day, ideally before joining the Class Connect. 
 
4) Have your child join their scheduled 20-minute Class Connect with each their partner language teacher and English teacher.
 
5) Email your teacher with questions or feedback and if you need more support.
Our remote learning plan is a blended-learning model with two pieces:  
 
1. Online or e-learning piece via Zoom and other online videos AND 
2. Material learning piece with tangible, paper-based learning materials sent home with students and used with guidance from in person family members. Students should have these materials for the first week. Teachers will let you know via email if they have additional materials for you to pick up beyond the first week. Material pick up at AXIS will occur Friday and Monday (3/29) 11:00am-1:00pm. After 3/39 this will be occassional only. Email teacher or info@AXIScolorado.org for details. See Pick Up Procedures below.
 
All families will have to do is click on the Weekly Lesson Plan and follow the instructions or links under each day in the Weekly Lesson Plan for each English and Partner Language.The information below is only for families that would like to read all of the details.
  1. E-Learning

Video Lessons: Teachers deliver instruction via pre-recorded video lessons hosted on Zoom. These lessons may reference paper-based materials teachers sent home or emailed. There will be two video lessons each day, one from the English teacher and one from the partner language teacher.

It is ideal for students to watch the pre-recorded video lessons and other items in the lesson plan before the Class Connect, but it is okay if it doesn’t work out that way. We all need to be flexible and do our best! Students can join both Class Connects if they would like to. 
 
Class Connect: Teachers host live video chats with students. Students interact live with teacher and classmates. There are two scheduled Class Connects  each day (Tuesday through Friday) for each English and Partner Language. These take place during two time frames 10:30am-12:30pm and 3:00pm-4:30pm.

  1. Material Learning: During this piece students use the tangible, paper-based learning materials teachers sent home with students in take home folders. Family members, including older siblings, can help guide children during these pieces of the lesson plan. Teachers will also email answers to independent work, and we encourage family members to review these with students. Remember we think about mistakes as learning opportunities - a chance to grow our brain! If your child does not get the answer right, that is a sign they need some support.

If your child receives special services or English Language Learner services, a staff member will be reaching out to you directly to schedule small group support time via video conference.
 
Pick Up: Remote Learning Materials, Medication, Meals 
Per the Governor's Public Health Order as a K-5 public school, AXIS will continue to provide critical services to our students including CEC meals, medicine pick up, and providing materials for remote learning. We will have staff onsite during limited timeframes to provide these critical services. We will be following strict health guidelines, and this will be a drive through system.
 
Available times: 
  • Beginning March 30th Mondays and Fridays ONLY 11:00am-1:00pm 
 
Items available for pick up: 
  • Student medications that are kept at school 
  • Student learning materials directed for pick up by the teacher (i.e. class materials, workbooks, etc.) 
  • Devices for remote learning 
  • Free meals for youth under 18 years
 
To schedule your pick-up:  
  • Email Jenny Whitaker at least 24 hours in advance at jwhitaker@axiscolorado.org, and state the item(s) you would like to pick up and the day/time you will pick them up (within the pick-up time-frame above). 
  • You will receive a confirmation email from Jenny stating when your items will be available for you. 
  • Items will be placed at the lunch pick-up line at the school. Please drive through the line and be prepared to give them your student's last name.
 
Just as we will be providing general education during this closure, we will also provide special education (SPED) and related services to students with identified disabilities. We are following federal and state guidance closely, and we are working to finalize the specifics of what these learning opportunities will look like during this remote learning time. Families will hear from an AXIS Student Services staff member with more information the week of April 4, 2020. English learner (EL) supports will also continue during this remote learning time. Our Program Specialist, Melissa Schramm mschramm@AXIScolorado.org, will reach out to you if this applies to your child. 
 
SPED and EL Services are tentatively set to begin the week of April 13, 2020. These specialists have been joining Class Connects for observation and to support teachers with differentiation and accommodations and to gather more information on how to best support students during this time.
 
We will also be working to develop a plan to continue a model similar to our AXIS Intervention and Enrichment (I/E) model. While campus was open, this I/E model targeted the needs of learners below grade level and learners identified as gifted and talented or above grade level. Our specialists will be developing a plan for these learners. This plan is set to begin the week of April 13, 2020.  
AXIS staff are here to help you every step of the way through this remote learning process. Although we are all working remotely, the school phone line (970) 658-4199 will be forwarded to our cell phones Monday through Friday  10:00am – 4:30pm. If you are sent to the voicemail, it means we are on the line with another call. 
 
Outside of that time frame, we will be checking voicemails Monday-Friday at 8:00am, 12:00pm, and 3:30pm. We will do our best to respond to your call within the same day, or at least within 24 hours. Another way to reach us is by email at  info@axiscolorado.org .  
 
Has your home technology access changed since you completed the AXIS Home Technology Access Survey? Here is a resource for a  free hotspot  or  free/affordable internet access . Please email  info@AXIScolorado.org  if you need a device or support.  

As a public school it is our duty to educate your child in partnership with you. Teachers will be doing additional checks for learning over the next few weeks. It is important that you allow your child to show what they know, so that teachers can use this information to better meet your child’s learning needs. This includes not assisting your child during the checks for learning time. You may need to help them with the “testing environment” and technology, but please do not help them with content. It is important that we get a valid and true picture of learning needs as we move forward into next year. Again, the expectations are different because the learning environment is different. These are not high-stakes tests and never punitive.

Partner Language Checks for Learning - Beginning May 4, Partner Language (PL) Class Connects will not be held May 4-8. During these Class Connect times PL teachers will be setting up times to meet one-on-one with students to check in on their listening and speaking proficiency, Monday through Friday. On Monday April 27, you will receive a Sign Up Genius to sign your child up for a one-on-one time slot. 

English Checks for Learning - Beginning May 4 English teachers will be supporting students to take the online STAR tests remotely during English Class Connect times. Children are familiar with this test, and they have taken it many times before. To prepare your child for the STAR test from home please view this quick video (<3 minutes) and review this doc to set up STAR testing on your child’s computer. 

AXIS Trimester 3 Progress Reports will be sent home via US Mail and available in Infinite Campus the last week of May/ beginning of June - AXIS teachers will be completing AXIS Trimester 3 Progress Reports to provide some closure on the academic year. Please understand that some grade level standards may not have been able to be taught to the degree planned or at all because of the move to remote learning. We will review and incorporate these standards into learning in the fall (or summer, if we are able to run a summer program). We will all take into consideration the circumstances of this time. It is important that we know where kids are academically, so we can create school and teacher plans to meet learning needs in the fall.

Do you fluently speak one of AXIS' Partner Languages? If so, would you be interested in helping to record stories in that Partner Language? If you are interested please email the partner language teacher and share how you could support them and partner language opportunities during this time. On Days When Remote Learning Seems Like Too Much: Prioritize Listening and Learning 
Thank you to the parents and teachers who helped us put together this Remote Learning Plan. We hope it will be simple, manageable, and effective; but some days we all need a plan B!  Please remember when days seem harder than others or you are experiencing technical difficulties, just read to your children no matter their age. Keep reading aloud even when they can read well themselves. This builds new vocabulary and gives them other benefits. Here are some tips for what to do when you read aloud to younger children and older children. We understand many of you do not speak the Partner Language your child is learning at AXIS. The priority is to keep the "listening" going while we are away, and here are some tips for that: replay the AXIS teacher-created Partner Language video lessons, listen to songs and audio books in the language, switch the DVD or Netflix video to the Partner Language, and see other resources

RENAME - Please rename your child to ensure the teacher can call on them. Click on "Participants," find your child, and then click "rename" to type in their name. 
 
MUTE - To be able to keep the group audio the best it can be, please mute your child upon entering and teach them how to mute and unmute when the teacher asks them.
