   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

Thank you all again for the amazing generosity during Teacher Appreciation Week, which continued into this week! we sure feel appreciated!

We are beginning to inventory all of our textbooks, chargers, headsets, etc. please send any AXIS materials you have at home back to school with your child if they attend on-site, or if you are an AXIS at Home student please gather up these items and drop them off at AXIS between 5/27-6/1.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share some important dates coming up over the next couple of months as we all start looking towards summer - hooray!

We are very excited to share that we have set the dates for some on-site AXIS Family summer events! Please save the dates, and we are truly looking forward to welcoming families onsite. Please plan to follow the recommended state and county public health guidance, which we will share closer to the event.
  • Thursday, June 3 4:30-5:30 Orientation for new-to-AXIS families: Preschool and K-5
  • Tuesday, June 22 5:30-7:00pm Grade Level Socials at AXIS
  • Tuesday, July 13 5:30-7:00pm Summer World Festival at AXIS
  • Thursday, August 12 5:30-7:00pm Get Ready for School Popsicle Social

AXIS is also planning to offer a flexible summer learning mini-program which will include reading, language practice, and math practice to prevent the summer slide. It will be mainly at home practice (via books, Amplify, Freckle, and Partner Language computer programs) with an opportunity to check in with AXIS teachers weekly via Zoom or on-site at AXIS. The goal is to keep English and partner language skills going over the summer months and prevent the summer slide. The projected dates for this are 6/14-6/25 and 7/12-7/30. More details and registration will be shared before the end of school.

We know these summer months will go fast, so we hope to make the most of them! In August, we will start back to school with a staggered start. Preschool, kinder, and 1st grade will begin on Monday, August 16. All students, preschool through 5th grade, attend Tuesday, August 17, and it will be the first day of school for grades 2-5.

Best,

Kari and the AXIS Team

Monday 5/3 marked the Return of the AXIS School-To-Home Folder!
Last year, we implemented a School-To-Home folder system, and this was very successful as families were able to see their child's learning daily. This type of system was discouraged as we returned to on-site schooling amidst COVID for a variety of reasons including the concern of COVID on surfaces and items traveling back and forth and also because many parents and teachers were just so overwhelmed with a variety of aspects of life and school amidst a pandemic. We have always planned to bring this system back next school year, but it was clear in the family feedback, that this system needs to return now. We have learned much more about COVID since last summer, and COVID on surfaces is not as concerning. Starting this week your on-site child will bring home their School-To-Home folder, which will include more details about this simple system. I understand it may seem an interesting choice to start this system up again with only a few weeks of school left. We know this system helps parents be more connected to their child's learning and the teachers, and starting it now will help everyone be ready for the system day 1 of the upcoming 2021-22 school year.

Monthly Safety Drills for On-site students - 5/20 is an "Evacuation" Drill
The last Thursday of the month we have one of our five safety protocol drills from the Standard Response Protocol. Due to COVID, drills will not look the same as in non-COVID times, as students will not be all moving through the halls at the same time or congregating in a shared location. Instead teachers will be re-teaching/reminding students of the procedures and talking and walking through procedures in their cohorts. We understand that some students may feel increased anxiety or feel less safe regarding drills. If this sounds like your child, please let them know ahead of time that the drill is coming and debrief it with them after school. We share the resource link above so you can use the same language with your child as we use at school.

   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

We hope your month of May is off to a great start! It is for our teachers here, as they are feelin' the appreciation from you - our awesome families. Thank you so much for helping our teachers feel appreciated during this Teacher Appreciation Week! They have worked tirelessly over the past year during this pandemic, going above and beyond compared to many other schools, and they care deeply about your child and their bilingual learning. Thank you, AXIS teachers!

Congratulations to our students who presented at the CSU International Poetry Event last Thursday! They did an outstanding job with the poetry reading, they were brave,  and they represented AXIS very well. Although this event has been held for years, this was the first time students have presented. We are happy to add this to our AXIS traditions and community engagement. Thank you to the students and their teachers for their preparation and commitment to this event.

   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

We hope you are well and enjoying the weather, and will continue to do so for this three-day weekend for students. Congrats to our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and teachers on completion of the CMAS state testing! A GIANT thank you to Mrs. Melissa Schramm and all of her work and coordination of this assessment as our School Assessment Coordinator. May is nearly here and we are entering our last month of school!

We have two big goals this time of year:
  • finish the school year strong and successfully, and
  • plan and work relentlessly to set up next school year for an amazing start.
We are so excited about next school year being much closer to normal, and for the return of so many things we love (Specials, AXIS Enrich...) and the addition of new things we are going to love (Math Lab, our new-to-AXIS teachers from France and Spain...)!

Thank you to those families who have shared your feedback with us via the school-wide and teacher surveys (still open through Sunday 5/2, see below). AXIS administration has read every piece of feedback. We are in awe of the abundance of positive feedback- thank you! We are so grateful and honored that you are having a such a satisfactory experience at AXIS, even in the most difficult pandemic year. And in line with our commitment to continuous improvement and our responsiveness to families, we are already putting your constructive feedback into action. One element we are bringing back in response to feedback is the School-To-Home folder.

COVID Reminders
As mentioned above, we had to conduct a COVID assessment on-site on March 31. You can review all AXIS COVID assessments on this webpage at any time, as only the impacted individuals will receive communications.

  • Please continue to do your best to follow the 3Ws of hand washing, wearing masks, and watching distance.
  • Err on the side of caution and keep children home at these times:
    • if children are experiencing any symptoms,
    • when anyone in the household is experiencing symptoms, or
    • when a household member is awaiting results of a COVID test.
  • People may have COVID and not know. Throughout the past year, we know community members who did not have any symptoms, and who tested positive for COVID, including children.
  • We offer free drive through, rapid COVID testing for AXIS students. Email healthoffice@AXIScolorado.org to learn more to set up a testing time.

   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

Last week we opened our School-wide Family Survey and today we launch our annual Teacher Family Survey. At AXIS we believe in continuous improvement for all of our team members. We view feedback as an opportunity for growth, and your feedback helps our team set goals for this growth. This feedback will only be shared with teachers as a whole/summary and not include specific parent names.

There are two quick survey forms:

  • Our Teacher Survey
    • opens today (4/21), please take ASAP and before 4/28
    • questions are asked about your child's teachers
    • Click here to take it, please and thank you!
  • Our School-wide Survey
    • open 4/14 through 4/23 (please take ASAP)!
    • takes ~7-10 minutes
    • please complete one per household
    • Click here to take it, please and thank you!

Surveys are one way we work to collect your feedback. We also always encourage you to reach directly out to teachers to ask questions or share both positive and constructive feedback on an ongoing basis, as it arises, as this is the best way to strengthen family and teacher relationships and support your child's success in school.

Also, don't forget that our teachers post daily learning objectives for all of our classes Partner Language (sample) and English (sample) in Microsoft Teams. Checking out your child's teacher's Team is a wonderful way to stay in the loop about all the great learning that is happening each day! If it has been awhile since you've logged into your child's Team, you can read a how-to refresher here. You can access Teams from any device! Go to the Team and then click on the !! Daily Objectives Channel.

Best,

Kari and the AXIS Team

Grade Level Family Directories
We are expanding these so families can more easily connect with each other outside of school now and this summer. If you would like to opt-out of having your family's basic information shared with other grade level families, you can indicate that in the School-wide survey here. Information included: parent name, child name, parent email, parent phone number, and zip code (to indicate area of town).

A few exciting updates about next school year:
  • Weekly in-person specials will be back and better than ever!
    • All children will have each art, music, and PE Monday through Wednesday.
    • Thursdays specials will be Explorer Thursdays where across each trimester students will engage in 3, 4-week explorer projects in each of these three areas STEAM/Maker (4 weeks), Music Project/Instruments (4 weeks), and PE Sports & Games (4 weeks).
  • Project and SEL Fridays!
    • Fridays will continue to be single cohort Fridays meaning students will only have their English or Partner Language cohort. This will allow teachers to continue their intentional SEL (social emotional learning/RULER lessons). They will also have more time to engage in projects aligned with Core Knowledge, Science, Social Studies and Singapore Math.
  • AXIS Enrich (After School Enrichment) will be back (pending public health guidelines)!
    • We are planning to bring our favorite enrichment organizations back on-site:
      • Tae Kwon Do, Amazing Athletes, Lego Robotics, Science Matters, sports and more!
      • If you have a favorite enrichment organization please share AXIS with them and have them contact Morgan Benton Family Programs Manager, mbenton@AXIScolorado.org.
  • AXIS Math Lab will launch!
    • Free after school tutoring in math for kids who are strengthening their fluency in math facts.
  • Twice/Bi-Monthly Grade Level Newsletters from Teachers will be back!
    • Next year as the COVID protocols and online teaching duties subside, teachers will have more capacity to resume our Bimonthly grade level newsletters where you will have an opportunity to see classrooms and languages in action and hear what is happening across the grade level.
  • Teachers coming from Europe!
    • We will have two experienced teachers arriving from France and Spain to teach French and Spanish at AXIS... more details coming soon! If you are interested in helping to welcome and/or host these teachers as they are getting set up in Fort Collins please email acollums@AXIScolorado.org. Again more details will be shared in May and their arrival is set for mid-July.

April is national volunteer month! Here are some non-classroom ways to get involved in volunteering with AXIS.

  • Preschool Gardening Committee: The Preschoolers will be beginning their Core Knowledge Plants Domain, that coupled with the fact that it is spring, means it is a great time to get the preschool garden boxes going again! If you are interested in helping out or donating/sharing gardening supplies, please email Ms. Morgan mbenton@AXIScolorado.org

  • School Library Committee: We are always seeking volunteers to help with our school library. You can come on-site to do this, as this volunteer opportunity does not interact with kids. Please email Mrs. Melissa Schramm mschramm@AXIScolorado.org.

Monthly Safety Drills for On-site students - 4/28 is a "Secure" Drill
The last Thursday of the month we have one of our five safety protocol drills from the Standard Response Protocol. March 25 was "Lockdown." February was "Evacuate." Due to COVID, drills will not look the same as in non-COVID times, as students will not be all moving through the halls at the same time or congregating in a shared location. We share the resource link above so you can use the same language with your child, as we use at school.

   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

Today we launch our annual spring family survey. What a year it has been! As you know AXIS was founded by parents and community members who believe in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual school with a commitment to strong academics and social emotional learning. Every day our actions are driven by our A-X-I-S mission. We continue to put our mission and our students and families first. We are grateful to be able to be a school who is responsive to the needs of our families, and our COVID response was just one example of that. We are proud to reflect and celebrate our successes as one of the only local schools who offered an on-site option since August (including for preschool) and one of the only schools who offered a remote learning program where teachers taught live to students consistently nearly every day of the week. Way to go AXIS teachers! We determined needs, matched best practices, designed these programs, sought out grant funding, and collected family feedback along the way.

Family feedback is a foundation of who we are and is essential to our commitment to continuous improvement. As we enter into the final planning phase for the upcoming school year we are looking forward to incorporating your feedback. On the survey we do ask you to include your email and name so that we can reach out to you if we need to learn more about any positive or constructive feedback you share. Please note that names will only be shared with AXIS administration. We also offer this link for anonymous feedback at any point.

There are two quick survey forms:

   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

We hope you are having a nice week. Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month in the US? Prior to COVID we had parents volunteering on-site at AXIS nearly every day. COVID imposed some barriers to volunteering on-site this year, and we look forward to the day when we have parents and our CSU volunteers back regularly on-site at AXIS. We were in contact earlier this week with the County Health Department regarding this topic, and unfortunately they do not recommend non-essential visitors be allowed into classrooms at this time.

Today we share a few non-classroom ways to get involved in volunteering with AXIS.

  • Join one of the Graduation/ Continuation Planning Committees: Help plan the end of year graduation for our 5th graders and continuation ceremonies for each our Preschoolers (4/5 year olds) and our Kindergarteners. These committees will meet virtually for planning. See the contact information below.

  • School Library Committee: We are always seeking volunteers to help with our school library. You can come on-site to do this, as this volunteer opportunity does not interact with kids. Please email Mrs. Melissa Schramm mschramm@AXIScolorado.org.

  • Teacher Appreciation Contributions and Monthly Celebrations: We have been blown away by the generosity of families and your contributions to our teacher lounge snacks, tea, and coffee, and our monthly teacher/staff appreciation lunches. You can continue to contribute to these at this link. The first week of May is Teacher appreciation week and our AXIS coordinators have some plans there. They will be reaching out for some support soon. If you are interested in helping out with these activities, please email Ms. Morgan or Ms. Angie at mbenton@AXIScolorado.org or acollums@AXIScolorado.org. Thank you!

Also we will be launching our AXIS Family Survey in the next week, as part of our commitment to continuous improvement. Your feedback is important to us and we use it!

Monthly Safety Drills for On-site students - 4/29 is a "Secure" Drill
The last Thursday of the month we have one of our five safety protocol drills from the Standard Response Protocol. March 25 was "Lockdown." February was "Evacuate." Due to COVID, drills will not look the same as in non-COVID times, as students will not be all moving through the halls at the same time or congregating in a shared location. We share the resource link above so you can use the same language with your child, as we use at school.

   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

Happy April! We are happy to share that 100% of our on-site staff have received their COVID vaccine, with a majority already considered fully vaccinated. It is important that we all remember that despite great strides, the pandemic endures, and COVID is still present in Larimer County. Yesterday afternoon, we had to conduct a COVID assessment on-site. AXIS community members who were impacted by the assessment have received letters (paper and email) with an overview of next steps. The impacted community members are now learning through AXIS at Home during their quarantine. You can review all AXIS COVID assessments on this webpage at any time, as only the impacted individuals will receive communications. Please review the important COVID reminders in the K-5 School-wide News section below. Thank you all for helping us keep our AXIS community healthy!

Last Friday night the State released updated information regarding state academic testing and CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success), which begins the week of April 13 for AXIS students in grades 3-5. Parents of students in grades 3-5 please click here to read the update. Please see the updated testing schedule below in the Dates section.

I close with a couple of celebrations! Coming up on April 29 at 5:00pm the Literatures, Languages, and Cultures Department at CSU will be hosting poetry readings in various languages followed by an English translation via Zoom in their annual International Poetry Reading event. We are excited to share that a couple of AXIS students from each of our upper grade Spanish, Mandarin, and French classes will be presenting. We will share the Zoom link as soon as we get it. If you are interested in sharing poetry in a language other than English please reach out to Fernando Valerio  Fvalerio@mail.colostate.edu.

Congratulations to our PBIS winners (class with the most positive behavior points in Class Dojo) this month (two ties!):
  • 3rd place - Yan Laoshi's Kinder and 4/5 Mandarin Classes;
  • 2nd place - Mrs. T's 4th grade English; and
  • 1st place - Ms. Crown's 3rd grade English AND Mrs. Hill's 2nd grade English.
2nd and 3rd place winners select the songs and dance-along videos for our monthly School-wide Dance Party coming up on April 23. Our 1st place winners select our spirit dress up day on April 23, and they chose Wacky/Tacky or Mix and Match.

Best,

Flag Retiring Ceremony
Local Girl scout troop 72886 heard that the AXIS/CEC flag was going to be replaced and jumped at the opportunity to officially retire the flag.  A girl scout color guard stood at attention while scouts lowered and folded the flag.  The two masters of ceremony read a script that explained why they were retiring the flag and what the steps of the process represented.  The troop will hold the second half of the ceremony, which will include a ceremonial burning and burial of the flag, during their summer camping trip.  Scouts who participated in the ceremony: Andrea Ortiz, Emma Hamel, Dinah McDaniel, Callie Sutherland, Adi Story, Kaydence Clark, Harley Carroll, Adelyn Aldrich and Eloise Grim.    HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

We hope you all had a nice spring break. I know starting back to school amidst the tragedy in Boulder has weighed on the hearts and minds of our staff, families, and community. The Colorado Department of Education recently shared these resources for schools and families connected to school safety, emotional trauma, and crisis support, should your family find them helpful: http://www.cde.state.co.us/safeschools/schoolsafety. We send our sincere condolences to the families affected.

As scheduled, we held our monthly safety drill this morning - Lockdown. This is the most intensive drill, and we understand that some children may need a supportive debrief with you about this. The teachers were very calm and supportive. Additional information about safety drills at AXIS in the ICYMI (In Case You Missed It) section below.

Bring international culture to you! Host an international student!
Spend one or two semesters opening your heart and home to an international exchange student who can attend the local high school of your choice. The nonprofit Council for Educational Travel USA (CETUSA) has so many students who say they enjoy younger siblings. We work with families who have kids of any age, and with empty nest families as well. Alice from Italy (one semester) likes to help children with homework and also to play games. She also enjoys going to sporting events, movies, and would try a sport like volleyball. Mailys from France (two semesters) says she likes to listen to children and help keep them busy. She has pets at home and enjoys cooking, reading, drawing, and has played rugby. Maiken from Norway (two semesters) says if you have younger children she will play with them and help them with what they need. She also enjoys many other activities including cross-country sports, drama/theatre, gymnastics, jogging, photography and singing. And, we have other students as well. For more information, please contact Local Coordinator Diane Fromme ~ I live in Fort Collins and have been a Coordinator for 20 years. 970-227-9865/text or call, or email dfrommecetusa@gmail.com

   HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE

Dear AXIS Families,

Happy snowy spring! Tomorrow (Thursday) is our last day of on-site school before spring break vacation. Ms. Anne's 2nd grade English class won our monthly February 3Rs positive behavior competition. They have elected to have our schoolwide spirit dress day tomorrow (Thursday) be a pajama day! It will be chilly, so please make sure your children are wearing warm pajamas and bring cold weather gear for the outdoor recess. Friday will be a remote learning day. Please note, our school's out day and spring break AXIS Enrich activities have been cancelled due to very low interest. Please read more details in the Family Programs section below.

As we enter spring break it is important that we all continue to do our part to keep our students, families, staff, and community safe and healthy from COVID and other viruses or illnesses. This includes keeping up our 3Ws: wearing our masks, washing our hands, and watching our distance. We should also continue to avoid large gatherings. The CDC recommends anyone who travels have a COVID test before traveling and have another COVID test 3-5 days upon returning and a quarantine as well. You can read more about those recommendations here.

We wish you all a safe, heathy, and rejuvenating spring break!

Best,

Kari and the AXIS Team

PS - Join me for a lunch chat on Tuesday, March 23 via Zoom. Bring any questions or thoughts!

Monthly Safety Drills for On-site students - 3/25 is a Lockdown Drill
The last Thursday of the month we will have one of our five safety protocol drills from the Standard Response Protocol. March 25 will be "Lockdown." February was "Evacuate." Due to COVID, drills will not look the same as in non-COVID times, as students will not be all moving through the halls at the same time or congregating in a shared location. Instead teachers will be re-teaching/reminding students of the procedures and talking and walking through procedures in their cohorts. We understand that some students may feel increased anxiety or feel less safe regarding drills, especially the most intensive one which is the "Lockdown" and will be held Thursday morning March 25. If this sounds like your child, please let them know ahead of time that the drill is coming and debrief it with them after school. We share the resource link above so you can use the same language with your child, as we use at school.

School Out Days (SOD) and Spring break AXIS Enrich- CANCELLED Due to lack of interest and enrollment.
To ensure AXIS Family Programs operates with financial best practices, AXIS Family Programs School's Out Days, may be cancelled if there is not enough interest or enough students enrolled. There are two important things to note about these School's Out Days options:
1) If you are interested, please sign up before the deadline. The deadline to sign up will be one week before the School's Out Day.
2) If you sign up, please read the minimum number of students required for the School's Out Day to operate (this will be listed in the Sign Up Genius notes). You can monitor this by revisiting the Sign Up Genius. It is always a good idea to have back up care.

3/12 Asynchronous (Remote) Learning Day, No Preschool through 5th Grade On-site
Repeat from HOS Message: Last week many AXIS staff members had the opportunity to receive the 1st dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Four weeks from that date, staff will receive the 2nd dose, which may present more intensive side effects for our teachers and staff. In our effort to be proactive and avoid an insurmountable staffing challenge, we have made the decision to make Friday, March 12 an asynchronous learning day for all K-5 AXIS students. There will be NO Preschool through 5th grade school on-site this day. There will be Chromebook maintenance over spring break, so no Chromebooks will be sent home. Your child can participate in the asynchronous learning from any internet enabled device. Please do your best to help your child connect. If your child is unable to attend remotely due to internet or device issues, please notify us and we will consider the absence excused.

We hope you are having a nice week and are enjoying the warm weather. AXIS trimester 2 student progress reports will be shared this week. Our progress reports are standards based, and through this report you will be able to view your child's level of mastery on the Colorado Academic standards.

  • You can click here to read more about the different areas of the progress report.
  • You will also be able to see your child's level of proficiency in partner language, you can click here to read more about what each level means.
    • We also track our students' progress to their end of the year partner language proficiency targets, and you can view those end of year language targets here
      • If your child is new to learning the partner language, instead of the "grade level" column on the left we think about this as "years in the language."
        • If your child is a 3rd grader and this is their second year learning French, you would look at the end of the year target for grade 2.
        • If your child started learning the language in kindergarten or first grade, look at your child's corresponding grade level.
      • You can also see these tables are separated by language, Spanish and French, are in one table and Chinese is in a separate table. This is because language acquisition can vary according to the language one speaks and the language one is learning.

We will not have family conferences this trimester, but you are always encouraged to reach out to your child's teachers via email, phone, or Zoom.

We encourage you to celebrate any and all improvement and growth with your child. You can also take this time to celebrate with your child the amazingness of learning a second language, and how this is a special gift that grows their brain, grows their heart, and is a gift they will always have within.

Best,

Kari and the AXIS Team
